The Last Ward is a short documentary made for the BBC that focuses on the work of five doctors delivering care to those who are reaching the end of their life around the country.
It was produced during lockdown and it combines recorded Zoom calls, phone calls and recorded audio diaries with animation and socially-distanced filming.
The idea for this project came from a doctor who reached out to us in the first weeks of the Covid-19 pandemic. She saw an opportunity to tell a story that goes beyond the numbers and statistics to hear from the doctors who were supporting people through their final moments during Covid-19.
It shows what is possible with remote community journalism via video conference with a small budget. It also shows how recorded calls and animation can work so well together.
